1Jesus then left that place and went into the region of Judea and across the Jordan. Again crowds of people came to him, and as was his custom, he taught them. 2Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, βIs it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?β 3βWhat did Moses command you?β he replied. 4They said, βMoses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away.β 5βIt was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law,β Jesus replied. 6βBut at the beginning of creation God βmade them male and female.β 7βFor this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, 8and the two will become one flesh.β So they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.β 10When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this. 11He answered, βAnyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her. 12And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.β 13People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. 14When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, βLet the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 15Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.β 16And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them. 17As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. βGood teacher,β he asked, βwhat must I do to inherit eternal life?β 18βWhy do you call me good?β Jesus answered. βNo one is goodβexcept God alone. 19You know the commandments: βYou shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.ββ 20βTeacher,β he declared, βall these I have kept since I was a boy.β 21Jesus looked at him and loved him. βOne thing you lack,β he said. βGo, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.β 22At this the manβs face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth. 23Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, βHow hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!β 24The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, βChildren, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.β 26The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, βWho then can be saved?β 27Jesus looked at them and said, βWith man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.β 28Then Peter spoke up, βWe have left everything to follow you!β 29βTruly I tell you,β Jesus replied, βno one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel 30will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age: homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fieldsβalong with persecutionsβand in the age to come eternal life. 31But many who are first will be last, and the last first.β 32They were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way, and the disciples were astonished, while those who followed were afraid. Again he took the Twelve aside and told them what was going to happen to him. 33βWe are going up to Jerusalem,β he said, βand the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles, 34who will mock him and spit on him, flog him and kill him. Three days later he will rise.β 35Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. βTeacher,β they said, βwe want you to do for us whatever we ask.β 36βWhat do you want me to do for you?β he asked. 37They replied, βLet one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.β 38βYou donβt know what you are asking,β Jesus said. βCan you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?β 39βWe can,β they answered. Jesus said to them, βYou will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with, 40but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared.β 41When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John. 42Jesus called them together and said, βYou know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 43Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.β 46Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (which means βson of Timaeusβ), was sitting by the roadside begging. 47When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, βJesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!β 48Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, βSon of David, have mercy on me!β 49Jesus stopped and said, βCall him.β So they called to the blind man, βCheer up! On your feet! Heβs calling you.β 50Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus. 51βWhat do you want me to do for you?β Jesus asked him. The blind man said, βRabbi, I want to see.β 52βGo,β said Jesus, βyour faith has healed you.β Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.
